Meanings come from this genre's invented word list, made for the generator: they aren't real-world etymology.
Survivors carry either an old-world name worn down to its grit, like Cole, Mara, Silas or Reya, or a callsign picked up in the ruins, like Ash, Rust, Cinder or Ember. The pack makes both, with blunt consonants and clipped one- or two-syllable shapes.
Its invented glossary ties the openings to salvage. Rus is rust, Cass a cache, Sil a silo, Flin flint and Zed the last letter. Endings add a trait: -ah unbroken, -ira far-walking, -ex outcast, -os of the wastes.
Family names are hammered together from materials and landmarks: Rust, Salt, Wire, Slate or Dry, then barrow, creek, forge, run or yard, sometimes closing on -stead, -holt or -gard. Ironvale, Saltmark and Dustwick sound like settlements as much as families.
That can be a story in itself. A surname might be the name of the shelter someone grew up in, and two strangers who share one may turn out to come from the same place.
Decide whether your character remembers the old world. Someone who does might keep a full name, first and surname; someone born afterwards might only ever have had a callsign, so try neutral with ‘Include a surname’ unticked.
Tone sets the mood. Chaotic gives crackling zz and zt for a radio operator with a sense of humour, soft brings lin and ee for a gentle medic, and powerful adds rak and don, a chief, for whoever runs the settlement.
Hand-picked names first, then more from the generator, each with how to say it and what its parts mean.
